John Courtney is based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He has almost 30 years experience in all areas of Information Technology in the financial services and manufacturing sectors, both on the technical side and in management.

For the last 6 years, he has been a full-time specialist in the area of Information Security. In that time, he has been the Information Security Manager for a major UK financial services organisation. In that capacity, he wrote and published a full set of ISO 17799-compliant Information Security policies and set up the procedures to establish those policies throughout the company.

He has initiated and carried out major programmes for risk assessment and management in all areas of IT.

He has also written and published policies for the use of internet and e-mail systems and implementing processes to control and monitor their use.

As Information Security Manager, he has been responsible for the security aspects of a large number of varied major projects in both technical and management areas: systems development; network management; virus protection systems and processes; Data Protection Act compliance and many others.
